Creating your pendulum
Gather the following items:
- A crystal or gemstone
- Jewelry wire
- A lightweight chain or cording
- Jewelry wire cutter and small nose pliers
Notice if your crystal or stone has any natural point. If there is, decide if you want it to be your top or bottom (many prefer a point to go downward). After you determine the point’s direction, wrap the object with jewelry wire until it’s secure. Allow for a loop at the top to connect it with a chain or cord that is roughly 1-0-12 inches in length. In a distraction-free environment, set an intention while you are creating your pendulum. Make sure to sustain focus while you are working so you can ensure pendulum does its job effectively.
Preparing or Cleaning Pendulums

- 1 tablespoon of mugwort
- ½ teaspoon powdered frankincense
- 6 drops of clary sage essential oil
Combine the ingredients in a glass jar and let it set in a cool, dark place for two weeks. You may also choose to place it in a crock pot with water on low until the oil has changed color. Strain and add a tad of vodka (as a preservative). Store the oil in brown bottles.
Using a Pendulum
Prior to your first divination, you need to familiarize yourself with your tool. Understand what direction will be yes, no, uncertain, or no answer. The most effective method is asking an easy question to your pendulum. Hold it comfortably in your hand while stabilizing your elbow on a table top. Ask it: “what direction is yes?” Notice if it swings left to right, right to left, clockwise, or counterclockwise.
